Trim fades first. It has no clear coat.

Paint has a sacrificial layer protecting it. Unpainted plastic has nothing — which is why trim goes chalky grey years before the paint does, under the strongest sun in the country. Restored through the material and sealed, not dressed.

Colour in the material, not on it

A dressing and a restoration look identical on day one. The difference shows up at the first wash, and again six months later — so the proof worth showing is the chalk coming out and the seal going on, not just a shiny before and after.

Before: UV-chalked fender flare, rocker cladding and faded door seal on a Jeep Wrangler
Before — chalky, porous and dry, not dirty
After: the same Jeep Wrangler trim restored to deep even satin black
After — satin, not wet-look. A shine means dressing.

The chalk has to come out first — a dressing glues it down
Exterior plastic trim bleached white and crazed with cracks, past restoring
Cracked or crazed is a replacement part — we will say so
Through the material, not onto it

What restoration actually does

The difference between this and a bottle of trim shine is where the colour ends up.

  • Deep clean first — the chalked, degraded layer is lifted out of the pores. Anything applied over it just glues the chalk down.
  • Restore through the material — colour goes into the plastic rather than sitting on it, which is why it does not wash off at the first rinse.
  • Seal with NanoPro® Nano Flex Plastic and Rubber — a proper barrier against the UV that caused the problem.
  • Rubber seals too — worth doing beyond appearance. UV-degraded door seals shrink and harden, and a hardened seal lets water, noise and salt-laden air into places they should not reach.

What we cannot bring back

  • Plastic that has gone chalky-white all the way through. That is lost material, and no treatment puts material back. We test a section before quoting on anything badly gone — ten minutes, and it tells you honestly what you are buying.
  • Trim that has started to crack or craze. At that point it is a replacement part. We will say so rather than make it look briefly better and take your money.
  • Nothing here is permanent the way a ceramic coating on paint is permanent. Sealed properly on this island it holds for a long time rather than a season — but a dressing would not survive a month of this sun, and we would rather set the expectation honestly.

ZIPPY KLEAN Technician Steve was absolutely a Professional. He answered all of our questions before we knew to ask it. We got the Worx package for OUR 2025 Ford Bronco and are extremely satisfied. Stay tuned for the 6 weeks report, the time it takes for the clear coat to cure. We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND ZIPPY KLEAN TO HELP MAINTAIN YOUR CAR IN PRISTINE CONDITION. MAHALO STEVE FOR YOUR PROFFESIONAL AND ALOHA ATTITUDE.

Trim restoration questions

How much does trim restoration cost?

Trim restoration is $75 added to a detail, and it is included in every coating package at no extra charge.

The price moves with how much trim the vehicle has and how far gone it is. A sedan with a few plastic strips sits at the bottom; a truck with full plastic cladding, bumpers and mirror caps sits above it.

We confirm before starting. No surprises on the invoice.

Why does trim go grey so fast here?

UV. Hawaiʻi carries the highest sustained UV load of any U.S. state, and unpainted exterior plastic has no clear coat protecting it — it is the most exposed material on the vehicle.

What is actually happening: UV breaks down the polymer at the surface and drives out the plasticisers and carbon black that make it flexible and dark. What is left is a chalky, porous, faded layer.

That is why trim fades before paint does. Paint has a sacrificial clear coat. Trim has nothing.

Is this just a dressing that washes off?

No. A dressing sits on the surface, looks good for two weeks and washes off. Restoration treats the material and then seals it, which is why it lasts and why it costs more than a bottle of tyre shine.

The honest version: nothing on faded plastic is permanent in the way a ceramic coating on paint is permanent. What we do is deep-clean the chalked layer out of the pores, restore the colour through the material rather than onto it, then seal with NanoPro® Nano Flex Plastic and Rubber.

Sealed properly on this island, expect it to hold for a long time rather than a season. A dressing would not survive a month of this sun.

Can badly faded trim come all the way back?

Usually, but not always. Plastic that has gone chalky-white and porous all the way through has lost material, and no treatment puts material back.

We test a section before quoting on anything badly gone. It takes ten minutes and it tells you honestly what you are buying.

The failure case is trim that has started to crack or craze. At that point it is a replacement part, and we will say so rather than make it look briefly better.

Does it work on rubber seals and bumpers too?

Yes — unpainted plastic, textured cladding, bumpers, mirror caps, cowls, rubber door and window seals, and wheel arch liners.

Rubber seals are worth doing for a reason beyond appearance: UV-degraded door seals shrink, harden and start letting water and noise through. Treating them keeps them pliable.

On an island, seals also matter because a hardened seal lets salt-laden air into places it should not reach.

Is trim included in a ceramic coating package?

Yes. Trim gets NanoPro® Nano Flex Plastic and Rubber as part of the Diamond Complete package, at no extra cost, on the grille, splitter and plastics.

If the trim needs restoring before it can be sealed — because it is already chalked — that restoration is included too. What is not included is replacing trim that has cracked.

See Stealth Diamond Borograph for what the full package covers.
