When polishing has nothing left to polish

Correction removes clear coat to level damage. That only works while there is clear coat left. NanoPro® CLEARPRO adds it back — hand-applied over faded and oxidised paint, no wet sanding, no booth, no repaint.

Clear added back, not polished away

Headlights are the easiest place to see what this product does, and the cheapest place it saves you money — a clouded lens is an oxidised clear layer, and re-clearing it costs a fraction of the part.

Before: clouded and yellowed headlight lens
Before — an oxidised clear layer, not dirty plastic
After: the same headlight re-cleared and optically clear
After — re-cleared, for a fraction of a new lamp

A hard edge means failed clear — a soft fade means dull paint

What CLEARPRO does

Three different services get confused with each other constantly. They are not interchangeable and the difference is which direction they work in.

  • Paint correction — removes clear coat to level defects. Works while there is clear left.
  • Ceramic coating — adds a protective layer on top of sound paint. Does not fix anything underneath.
  • NanoPro CLEARPRO — adds clear coat back where it has failed. The only one of the three that helps once the clear is gone.
Faded & oxidised paint Clouded headlights Carbon fibre Piano black trim Boats, RVs & aircraft

Headlights are the quiet win. Clouded headlights are an oxidised clear layer, and re-clearing them often saves a four-figure part. Same for the gloss black trim on modern grilles and interiors — it fails the same way and can be re-cleared rather than replaced.

Tell them apart

Dull paint, or failed clear?

What failed clear coat looks like
  • Chalky white patches with sharp edges, not a gradual fade
  • Usually on the roof, hood and upper door frames — where the sun lands hardest
  • Sometimes visibly peeling away in sheets
  • Flat dead pigment underneath, with no gloss anywhere in the patch
  • Does not improve at all when you wet it — dull paint looks better wet, failed clear does not

Why we see so much of it here. Hawaiʻi runs the highest sustained UV load of any U.S. state, and UV is exactly what breaks clear coat down. Not because the sun is closer — at 19°N it is nearly overhead, so its rays cross far less atmosphere and arrive with much less UV filtered out. Cars here fail clear coat at an age that surprises people from the mainland.

Then protect it. A new clear coat left bare is facing the same sun that killed the last one. Finishing with Stealth Diamond Borograph puts something on top that takes the UV instead.

What it costs

Prices shown are cash prices. Pay by cash or check and that is what you pay. The card price is shown in grey beside every figure — slightly higher, because card processing costs us that. Nothing is added at checkout either way: both prices are on the page before you book.

Hawaii GET is added at invoice and shown as its own line, at the state maximum visible pass-on of 4.712% (4% state + 0.5% Hawaiʻi County surcharge). Prices on this page do not include it.

Clear coat questions

Can faded clear coat be restored without repainting the car?

Yes. NanoPro® CLEARPRO is a hand-applied clear coat that goes directly over faded and oxidised paint, restoring it without wet sanding and without a repaint.

A conventional repaint means stripping, prepping, spraying and curing in a booth, and the car is off the road for days. CLEARPRO is wiped on by hand over the existing finish, which is why NanoPro describes it as saving the customer thousands against a new paint job.

It is not a polish and it is not a coating. Polishing removes a layer of clear to level damage, which only works while there is clear left to remove. CLEARPRO adds clear back.

Why does clear coat fail so fast on the Big Island?

UV. Hawaiʻi runs a UV index around 7 in winter and 11+ in summer — the highest sustained load of any U.S. state — and UV is precisely what breaks clear coat down.

The sun is not closer here. At 19°N it is nearly overhead, so its rays cross far less atmosphere than on the mainland and arrive with much less UV filtered out. Clear coat absorbs that until the resin fails, goes chalky and starts delaminating in sheets.

That is why we see failed clear coat on cars here at an age that would surprise someone from the mainland. It is also why this service exists as more than a niche.

What is NanoPro ClearPro?

CLEARPRO is a wipe-on, hand-applied clear coat from NanoPro®, released for professional use only to elite certified NanoPro installers.

It is the same restricted-distribution model as the rest of the NanoPro line — the product is not sold to the public, and installers have to be certified on it before they can buy it.

We are a certified elite NanoPro installer, which is also what gives us access to Stealth Diamond Borograph and Liquid PPF.

What can ClearPro be applied to?

Faded paint, clouded headlights, carbon fibre and piano black trim — and NanoPro also lists it for boats, RVs and aircraft.

The headlight and piano-black cases are the ones people usually have not considered. Clouded headlights are an oxidised clear layer, and the gloss black trim on modern grilles and interiors fails the same way. Both can be re-cleared rather than replaced, which on headlights alone often saves a four-figure part.

For gelcoat rather than paint, the right services are heavy gelcoat compounding or single-stage polishing.

How do I know if I need this instead of paint correction?

If there is clear coat left to level, you need correction. If the clear has failed, correction has nothing to work with and you need clear added back.

Failed clear coat looks distinctive once you know it: chalky white patches with sharp edges, often on the roof, hood and upper door frames where sun hits hardest, sometimes visibly peeling away in sheets.

That is the giveaway — correction can take dull paint back to glossy, but it cannot do anything about an area where the clear is simply gone. Polishing a failing clear coat accelerates the failure.

How long does the result last?

It depends heavily on what goes over it. Bare, it is a new clear coat facing the same UV that killed the last one.

Which is why we recommend finishing with Stealth Diamond Borograph on top. The coating takes the UV instead of the clear, which is the entire point of coating anything on this island.

Doing the clear and leaving it bare is spending real money on a surface that starts degrading immediately.

How much does it cost?

Quoted on inspection, always — the condition range on failed clear coat is enormous and any flat price would be a guess.

What drives the number: how many panels are affected, how far the failure has gone, whether there is sound clear coat at the edges to blend into, and whether correction is needed on the panels that have not failed yet.

We look at it, do a test area, and give you a firm number before anything starts.
