A spot sits on the paint. Etching has eaten into it.

One comes off chemically in minutes. The other has to be polished out of the clear coat. Knowing which you have is the difference between a small bill and a real job — and the longer a spot sits in island sun, the faster it becomes the second one.

Tell them apart before you pay for the wrong fix

A surface deposit and an etched crater look nearly identical in flat light and cost very different amounts to remove. Raking light is what separates them, and it is the reason we ask for photos taken at a low angle in direct sun.

Before: etched hard water spots casting shadows across a car panel
Before — deposits sit on top, craters throw shadows
After: the same panel polished flat with no spot shadows remaining
After — levelled flat, no shadows left to catch

Which one do you have?

The finger test
  • Smooth to the touch but visible — surface mineral deposit. Comes off chemically. Cheap and quick.
  • Rough to the touch, or visible from an angle as a ring or crater — the mineral has bitten into the clear coat. Needs machine polishing to level the clear coat down to the bottom of the etch.
  • Still visible after a proper wash — it was never going to wash off. That is etching.

The longer it sits, the deeper it goes. A spot left through a few hot cycles becomes etching. Under a UV index of 11+ — the highest sustained load of any U.S. state — that happens faster here than almost anywhere.

This is not the same as vog etching, though they look alike. Water spots are mineral deposits; vog is acid. Same repair, different prevention. See vog, salt and UV protection.

Cheaper than fixing it twice

Stopping it happening again

  • Dry the car. Air drying is what leaves the mineral behind in a concentrated ring. Drying it off takes the minerals with the water.
  • Get out of sprinkler range. The usual culprit, and the worst, because it is the same spot on the same panel every single day. A car parked in sprinkler range will etch in weeks.
  • Coat it. A coating does not stop minerals landing — it stops them bonding, so they rinse off instead of etching in. On this island that is a large practical difference.
  • Catch it monthly. Most of the value in the maintenance program is timing: spotting caught at four weeks is a surface deposit, caught at a year it is etching.
  • Know your water. Catchment and well water on this island vary enormously in hardness. If you wash at home and spot badly, that is worth testing.

Zippy Klean was recommended by the dealer in Honolulu for my new 2025 Porsche. I was VERY impressed by the rep who detailed the car at my house. He was extremely knowledgeable and you can't beat the convenience! They're my "go-to guys" now!

Water spot questions

How much does hard water spot removal cost?

Water spot removal is $150 for the body and $100 for glass, added to a detail. Motorcycles are $75.

Light spotting is included in every coating package at no extra cost. Heavy etching is quoted on top after inspection.

The spread is about how far in the mineral has bitten. Surface deposits come off chemically. Etching has to be polished out.

What is the difference between a water spot and etching?

A spot sits on the paint. Etching has eaten into it — and that is the difference between a chemical job and a machine job.

Run a finger over it. Smooth and visible means a surface deposit, which dissolves off. Rough, or visible from an angle as a ring or crater, means the mineral has bitten into the clear coat and the only fix is levelling the clear coat down to it.

The longer it sits, the deeper it goes. A spot left through a few hot cycles becomes etching.

Why is hard water such a problem on the Big Island?

Because a lot of island water is hard, catchment and well water vary enormously, and the sun bakes the deposit in faster than almost anywhere.

The mechanism: water lands on the panel, evaporates in the sun, and leaves dissolved minerals behind in a concentrated ring. Under an 11+ UV index that evaporation happens fast and hot, which is exactly the condition that drives minerals into clear coat.

Sprinklers are the usual culprit — the same spot on the same panel hit daily. A car parked within range of a sprinkler will etch in weeks.

Is this the same as vog etching?

No, and they need the same treatment but have different causes — water spots are mineral deposits, vog etching is acid damage.

They look similar: rings and haze in the clear coat. The difference matters for prevention, not for repair. Water spotting is fixed by changing where the car parks or what water hits it. Vog is in the air and you cannot avoid it.

See vog, salt and UV protection for the acid side of it.

Can you get spots off glass?

Usually yes. Glass etching is common and often worse than paint because nobody notices it until it is bad, and because wipers grind the deposit in.

Light deposits come off chemically. Etched glass needs a mechanical polish with cerium oxide, which is slower and is why glass is priced separately.

There is a limit: deep etching in laminated glass sometimes cannot be fully removed without optical distortion, and we will not trade your windshield clarity for appearance. We will tell you if yours is at that point.

How do I stop it happening again?

Dry the car instead of letting it air dry, keep it out of sprinkler range, and put a coating on it so the water cannot grip in the first place.

A coating does not make water spots impossible — minerals still land on the surface. What it does is stop them bonding, so they rinse off instead of etching in. That is a large practical difference on an island.

The maintenance program catches spotting monthly while it is still a surface deposit rather than etching. Most of the value in that program is timing.

My spots have been there for years. Any hope?

Often yes, if the etching has not gone through the clear coat — age matters less than depth.

We do a test section before quoting. A small area taken through the full process so you can see what actually comes out. Half an hour, and it settles it.

If the etching has gone through the clear, correction cannot reach the bottom of it and the honest answer is paint. We will say so rather than polish hopefully.
