Salt doesn’t need rain. It needs air.

Marine salt pulls moisture straight out of humid air, so a dried salt film on bare metal is an active corrosion cell every night whether or not it rains. That is why a stone chip that would sit harmlessly for years on the mainland becomes a problem here in months.

Orange specks are not rust yet

Nearly every "my paint is rusting" call on this island turns out to be iron fallout — airborne metal particles that landed on the clear coat and started rusting there. It dissolves. Actual rust coming up through the panel does not, and the two look identical from six feet away, so this is the part worth seeing up close.

Before: fine orange iron fallout specks scattered across white paint
Before — hundreds of specks sitting ON the clear coat
After: the same white panel completely clear of fallout specks
After — dissolved off, not sanded or polished out

Two different problems

Rust bloom, or actual rust?

They look related and they are not. One wipes out chemically; the other does not.

Rust bloom — iron in your paint
  • Tiny orange specks across the paint, worst on horizontal panels and light colours
  • It is brake dust and industrial iron that landed and embedded in the clear coat
  • Dissolves out chemically — and that step is already included in every detail and coating package we do
Actual rust — your metal corroding
  • Starts at a chip, a seam, a fastener or a scratch where bare metal is exposed
  • Spreads under the paint, so the affected area is always larger than it looks
  • Bubbling paint means it is already underneath and moving
  • Quoted on inspection, and sometimes the honest answer is a bodyshop rather than us
The mechanism, not the marketing

Why island rust behaves differently

  • Salt is hygroscopic. It pulls water out of humid air. A dried salt film is still an active corrosion cell, continuously, with no weather required.
  • Mainland rust needs an event — wet weather, road salt in winter. Island rust needs nothing but air, because the salt provides the electrolyte and the humidity provides the water.
  • Vog adds acid. The USGS describes vog as primarily sulfuric acid, with droplets carrying “the corrosive properties of dilute battery acid.”
  • So a stone chip is urgent here. Exposed bare metal plus salt plus humidity plus acid starts working immediately. The cheap fix is before corrosion starts; the expensive one is after it has crept under the surrounding paint.
  • It hides where nobody looks — door jambs, sills, seams, the backs of trim pieces, around badges, behind wheels.

If you are planning a coating, chips come first. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it — including an active corrosion site. We check for that before any coating goes on.

Prices shown are cash prices. Pay by cash or check and that is what you pay. The card price is shown in grey beside every figure — slightly higher, because card processing costs us that. Nothing is added at checkout either way: both prices are on the page before you book.

Hawaii GET is added at invoice and shown as its own line, at the state maximum visible pass-on of 4.712% (4% state + 0.5% Hawaiʻi County surcharge). Prices on this page do not include it.

A coating does not stop rust that has already started. What it does is stop salt bonding, so a rinse actually carries it away instead of moving it around. That is a real difference on this island, and it is the honest version of the claim.

I had 3 pickup trucks and 3 SUV’s done by Kelson. He did a great job and all the vehicles look like new. Thank you

Did an amazing job on my wife's car. Ceramic coating all round....Explained all details and benefits. On time and would highly recommend. For all aspects of keeping you're mode of conveyance looking pristine !!!!

We are so pleased with the job That Skylar at Zippy Klean did on our car. It was covered in tons of dog hair inside, we thought it would never come clean. He came to our house and worked for hours vacuuming and cleaning the interior and the exterior. It was sparkling inside and out.

Rust questions

How much does rust removal cost?

Always quoted on inspection. Rust is the one service where a price given over the phone is meaningless, because what matters is how deep it goes and you cannot see that in a photo.

Surface rust bloom and iron fallout in the paint are cheap and quick — they are included in the decontamination step of every detail and coating package.

Rust that has gone into the metal is a different job entirely, and sometimes it is a bodyshop job rather than ours. We will tell you which yours is.

What is the difference between rust bloom and actual rust?

Rust bloom is iron particles sitting in your paint that have oxidised. Actual rust is your vehicle’s own metal corroding. The first wipes out chemically; the second does not.

Rust bloom shows up as tiny orange specks across the paint, especially on horizontal panels and light-coloured cars. It is brake dust and industrial iron that has landed and embedded. Chemical decontamination dissolves it, and that step is already in every detail and coating we do.

Actual rust starts at a chip, a seam, a fastener or a scratch where bare metal is exposed. It spreads under the paint, and by the time you can see it the affected area is larger than it looks.

Why is rust so aggressive on the Big Island?

Because marine salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of humid air, so a dried salt film on bare metal is an active corrosion cell every single night, whether or not it rains.

That is the part people underestimate. Mainland rust needs wet weather or road salt in winter. Island rust needs nothing but air, because the salt provides the electrolyte and the humidity provides the water, continuously.

Add vog — which the USGS describes as primarily sulfuric acid — and you have acid plus salt plus humidity working on any exposed metal, year round. It is why a chip that would sit harmlessly for years on the mainland becomes a problem here in months.

I have a stone chip down to metal. How urgent is it?

Urgent. On this island, exposed bare metal plus salt plus humidity is a corrosion cell that starts working immediately and does not stop.

A chip that would be cosmetic on the mainland is a countdown here. The cheap fix is touching it in before corrosion starts. The expensive fix is after it has crept under the surrounding paint.

If you are planning a coating, chips have to be dealt with first anyway — a coating locks in whatever is underneath it, including an active corrosion site.

Can you fix rust that has bubbled the paint?

Bubbling means the rust is already under the paint and spreading, and the affected area is always larger than what you can see. That is usually a bodyshop job rather than a detailing one.

We will be straight with you about it. Treating the surface of bubbled paint makes it look better briefly and does nothing about what is happening underneath — and some shops will happily take money for exactly that.

What we can do is assess it honestly, treat what is genuinely treatable, and tell you when the real answer is metalwork and paint.

How do I stop it coming back?

Keep bare metal from existing. That means dealing with chips quickly, keeping salt rinsed off, and putting a barrier between the island and the vehicle.

A coating helps in a way that is specific and worth understanding: it does not stop rust that has started, but it gives salt a surface it cannot bond to, so rinsing actually removes it instead of moving it around.

The maintenance program includes door jambs, sills and seams every month — which is exactly where salt collects and where nobody looks until it is too late.
